About the project

Maji Ndogo, the vibrant heart of Africa, suffered a terrible drought that made clean water a luxury. Every day is a struggle as people queue for hours, often in vain, for their share of life’s most basic necessity. Our mission in this project is to restore the flow of water in Maji Ndogo using data to inform our decisions.

Plan of action to tackle the crisis

1. Focus efforts on improving water sources that affect the most people.
  • Prioritize shared taps for greater benefit.
2. Many wells are contaminated. Fixing these will benefit a lot of people.
3. Repairing existing infrastructure will reduce queue times and restore water supply.
4. Installing taps in homes would stretch resources too thin at the moment.
5. Most water sources are in rural areas, posing logistical challenges for repairs.

Practical solutions

1. For communities using rivers, we will dispatch trucks for temporary relief, while drilling wells for a permanent solution.
2. Install reverse osmosis and UV filters for contaminated wells.
3. Send additional water tankers to busy taps and install new taps where needed.
4. For taps with short queue times, long-term solutions involve installing taps in homes.
5. Repairing infrastructure like reservoirs and pipelines benefits many people at once.
